Local to Global Internship Program

The Local to Global Program at Rutgers Newark is an internship experience accompanied by the course “Issues in Social Work” taught by Prof. Clay Walton, who also serves as the executive director of the Office of Global Initiatives and Experiential Learning.
The course offers an overview of the successes and challenges in non-profit and NGO work, accompanied by high-impact student internship opportunities. Throughout the coursework and internships, students engage with questions about their identities, experiences in diverse workspaces, and the culture of organizations that create change. The internship serves as a bookend experience, allowing students to start with a local internship and progress to a more intensive opportunity the following summer or year, depending on their interest.
The Innovation Grant provided by the E3C supplied stipends for each student participating in immersive internships in the Summer of 2023. Stipends are a valuable enhancement to the student internship experience as they provide financial support, promote a sense of relief and security, and allow students to fully engage in fieldwork and training in which they may have otherwise been unable to participate.
“As a Newark resident, I have had a positive experience working towards improving the quality of life in my community by engaging in activities such as beekeeping, farming, and promoting sustainability through my internship experience at Apiary in the Sky” - Shampa Sydney
