Opportunities
Opportunities are special initiatives designed to help students thrive. They often involves a selection process to ensure a good fit, and once chosen, students are invited to actively participate by dedicating time and energy to meaningful activities like attending meetings, completing projects, or joining exciting events.
The program provides support services at many levels to help interested students be successful in STEM majors, such as academic support and specialized advising. Students are also eligible for mentoring, free tutoring services and paid research opportunities with university faculty. The program now includes over 50 alliances and is considered one of the most successful of its kind.
The program's mission is to prepare students from low-income, first-generation, and historically excluded backgrounds for doctoral studies. The overall goal is to increase Ph.D. degree attainment.
This award-winning, credit-bearing program supports high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds admitted to RBS as first-year undergraduates. Beginning the summer before enrollment and continuing through graduation, the program offers unique opportunities each year, including enrichment and service-learning activities. Students build community, develop professional and soft skills, and gain valuable experiences to support their academic and personal growth.
The Rutgers Scarlet Service Internship (RSSI) Program offers students from Rutgers-Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick the chance to earn up to $5,000 while completing at least 150 hours over 10-12 weeks in a summer internship at a public service non-profit or government office. These in-person internships require 75-100% of work onsite. Students also take a virtual, asynchronous course to explore public service, enhance career readiness, and build professionalism skills.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute brings college students to Rutgers-Newark for a one-of-a-kind opportunity to conduct original lab research with our award-winning faculty. The program is designed for undergraduates in STEM fields who plan to pursue graduate programs or medical school after graduating.

Aimed at helping military students transition on and off campus and educate the campus community. The Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program provides a variety of services to veterans on campus. Among them are increased access to high-quality mental health resources and supportive services at VA and developing pathways to provide appropriate referrals to on-campus services and resources, such as peer support, crisis intervention, and services for students with disabilities requiring special accommodations.
The Office of Career Resources and Exploration at Rutgers University-Newark is a central resource whose mission is to empower undergraduate and graduate students by fostering skill development and facilitating connections to support their career success.
Student Groups and Organizations
Student groups provide a space for students to unite and promote shared interests, goals, or identities. These groups can focus on cultural affinity, career networking, social connections, or academic collaboration.
The Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) is where you can explore multiple identities within the Rutgers University–Newark community. The IRC houses the LGBTQ Student Services and Undocumented Student Services areas, which serve the RU-N community through dialogues across differences, cultural/identity-based group advisement, social justice initiatives, student engagement, activism, and community support.
The Student Life team supports 100+ student organizations, including academic, pre-professional, cultural, religious, special interest, media groups, graduate groups, fraternities and sororities, and governing councils.
